If you’d told me Dungeons & Dragons would become the huge media sensation it is now back in the 90’s… I might have been able to believe it. Because gaming is fucking awesome.
But if you’d told me people would one day doubt their ability to make a character, let alone run a game… that would be a step too far.
I love table-top roleplaying games (TTRPGs) like Dungeons & Dragons because of the inherent folk arty-ness of the craft. From end to end, the entire hobby is filled with bad acting, worse scripts, mediocre character sketches, low fidelity worlds drawn on graph paper, and some truly impressive body odor, all combined together in an unventilated basement (if you’re lucky).
And none of that matters even slightly. Because this hobby is wonderful. Nothing else combines artistic collaboration and storytelling into a bizarrely personal shared experience quite like gaming.
I have lived lives with strangers able to change me profoundly, show me a way forwards toward who I want to be. Gaming is how I met my wife, my best friend, and honestly myself. Each new character is a new way to learn who I am and who I want to be.
But, y’know, with orcs.
I’m writing this blog for all the folk inspired to join this decades long journey, but feel utterly intimidated.
Maybe you’re in high school, trying to figure out how to run your first game and feel like you’ll never measure up to Matt Mercer or Brennan Lee Mulligan. Or maybe you’re in your thirties and always wanted to play but could never get a table of players together. Or hell, maybe you’re on the internet and bored.
As a Dungeon Master, Storyteller, and Player for over thirty years, welcome home.
I’ve introduced hundreds of people to this hobby, and I’m here to give you a way to express yourself and have fun with your friends through a hobby that’s inspired millions.
Let’s get rolling.
